Essar Ports Limited (EPL) develops and operates ports and terminals. It is one of the largest private sector port companies in India by capacity and throughput.
Essar Ports develops and operates ports and terminals for handling dry bulk, break bulk and general cargo. It has an existing aggregate capacity of 82 MTPA across facilities located at Hazira in the state of Gujarat on the west coast of India, one dry bulk export terminal at Paradip in the state of Odisha and two iron ore berths on the outer harbour of Vizag Port in the state of Andhra Pradesh on the east coast of India.
The facility in Hazira is used primarily for the receipt of raw materials, such as iron ore / pellets, limestone, dolomite and coal, and for the dispatch of finished steel products. The facilities at Paradip are used for handling dry bulk cargo while in Visakhapatnam, they are used for the dispatch of iron ore.
The company is in the process of increasing its aggregate ports capacity to 140 MTPA with expansion of the Hazira facility from 30 MTPA at present to 50 MTPA; an 18 MMTPA coal import terminal at Paradip in Orissa and expanding iron ore terminals consisting of three berths from 16 MTPA to 32 MTPA at Visakhapatnam in the state of Andhra Pradesh and a 20 MTPA Coal Terminal in the Port of Beira, Mozambique. Essar has also invested in the strategically located Port of Algoma in Canada.
