The Malkangiri district of Odisha is largely populated by tribals and huge pockets of the district remain cutoff for around eight months in a year due to its geographical location. Needless to say, good healthcare services are not available to people here. Essar had repeatedly been requested by the local villagers to organize an eye care camp in the area. Responding to their need, Essar conducted a two-day eye care camp on November 6-7, 2013.

As a follow up to the earlier eye care camp, Essar Foundation with Steel (EStIL) Vizag organized a specialist eye care camp for several villages of Chitrakonda and Chintapalli rural blocks, which are on the state border of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Both these blocks are remote; the nearest available healthcare facility is in Vizag, which is more than 300 km away. Like the first one, this eye care camp was also organized with the help of the renowned Shankar (Eye Care) Foundation, Vizag. The second round of camps was conducted during December 7-25, 2013.
Beneficiaries: - Patients from more than 15 villages in a 70-km radius benefited from the camp.
- Follow-ups were done for more than 150 patients who had earlier received treatment for various ailments.
- Tribals suffering from different levels of myopia and hyperopia were provided with spectacles.
The Foundation has received several requests from villages nearby to conduct similar camps and is exploring possibilities for convergence with local administration for a mass campaign on eye care.
