Foundation organizes cataract detection camp

Durgapur, Bardhaman District, West Bengal: Cataract is a progressive clouding of lens in the eyes that leads to decreased vision. It is estimated that over 7 million people in India suffer from this condition. Essar Foundation in association with Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) organized a cataract detection camp on March 28, 2014 in Kantaberia village in Durgapur-Faridpur Block, Bardhaman District, West Bengal in view of repeated requests by people from the area. 


During the camp, individuals with suspected cases of cataract were examined and the detected cases will be operated on at the eye care unit of IRCS, Durgapur. The costs of surgery will be borne by Essar Foundation. The IRCS team comprised eye specialists, nurses and volunteers and Essar Foundation was supported by the CSR team and volunteers. Massive campaigning was organized in 24 villages located within the CBM operational areas prior to the camp, where people were informed about the camp and its purpose. The camp followed the standard rules and regulations of patient safety and hygiene with sterilized medical instruments and bio-medical waste disposal facility.

Senior officials from Essar Oil Limited including Mr. Vilas Tawde, Project Manager and Ms. Lata Tait, VP, PMO were present during the camp. Health officials from the nearby Kantaberia Public Health Center also visited the camp.
