Essar Foundation has always recognized the philosophy of ensuring every child's right to education. With this belief, it has supported various education related initiatives for over a decade.
Hazira and Jamnagar, Gujarat
The Gujarat government launched Shala Pravesh Utsav in 2003 to drive 100% enrolment and zero drop-outs in primary schools. This initiative specially focuses on education for the girl child. Essar Foundation distributed school bags, learning material and 'pragna kits' during the Shala Pravesh Utsav in 2015. Over 3,900 children in schools located near Hazira and Jamnagar received the kits. Special events were also held in the vicinity of the Essar Steel Hazira facility and Essar Oil Vadinar Refinery to encourage parents to enrol their children in primary schools.
An interesting feature of this year's initiative was that 400 of the school bags gifted to the children were stitched by the Apparel Training and Manufacturing Centre at Salaya. Essar Foundation supports this institution. It was a proud moment indeed — a skill development initiative that not only provided vocation to the women in the region, but also made the project self-sustainable in the long run.
Dantewada, Chhattisgarh
Essar Foundation also organized a special event at Dantewada in Chhattisgarh to promote children's education. Senior government officials at tended the event and endorsed primary education to make parents aware of the need to ensure that their children get the opportunity to build a self-confident and empowered life. Children were also given school uniforms and learning material at the function.
