Essar Foundation, Tori participated and supported the members of the Jitia Jatra Sarna Samiti in organizing the grand Jitia Mela. An elaborate event was organized by Jitia Jatra Sarna Samiti on September 29, 2013 at Chatro village on the eve of Jitia Mela. Traditionally, Jitia festival is a festival celebrating agriculture and is observed with great fervor among the tribals of Jharkhand. The festival is celebrated over a period of 12 days after Karma festival, another important festival.

The chairman of Kisan Vikas Sahkari Swavalambi Samiti, representative MP of Chatra and eminent local leaders were among the guests for the event. They gifted dhols and nagadas (traditional percussion instruments) to the folk music groups of different villages and encouraged them in the colorful display of dance and cultural show. A huge gathering of children, parents and community from the neighboring villages witnessed the event.

The girls and women folk performed the traditional dance in tribal costumes and the village pahan (priest) performed rituals for the much-revered village deity. This is one of the biggest festivals celebrated by Essar’s neighboring village communities each year. Promoting the local culture is one of the strengths of Essar Foundation that deepens the bond with local communities greatly.
