Hemophilia is a rare hereditary blood defect which is characterized by delayed clotting of the blood. This happens due to the lack of sufficient blood clotting proteins (clotting factors). In severe hemophiliacs, even a minor injury can result in blood loss for days or weeks. Sometimes the injury never even heals completely. In areas such as the brain or joints, this can be fatal or permanently debilitating. Like diabetes, there is no cure for hemophilia but it can be controlled and major complications can be avoided through regular care. Early detection and condition management is the key for people suffering from this condition. Studies show that at least one in 10,000 people are hemophiliac. The city of Surat with its population of 600,000 people is estimated to have at least 600 hemophiliacs, but only around 400 of them are registered.

The Hemophilia Day Care Center at Surat can address the needs of more than 600 patients per day. All patients will be treated free of cost at the integrated treatment facility which includes investigation or diagnosis laboratories, counselling for patients and family, physiotherapy and a five bed day care ward. The center has a specialized team comprising of a medical officer, nurses, lab technician, physiotherapist, medical social worker, ward boys and computer operator. Initially, the center will operate from 9am to 5pm and it will start functioning 24/7 gradually.
