As part of its efforts to promote pursuance of higher education amongst school children of rural West Bengal, Essar Foundation has introduced Gyan Jyoti, an initiative to recognize and reward academically high performing students in schools located in the operational area of CBM Raniganj, Essar Oil Limited Durgapur. The students are from secondary (Std X) and higher secondary (Std XII) sections across eight schools and have been shortlisted on the basis of their academic performance in the West Bengal board examinations 2013. The Gyan Jyoti scholarships cover their basic educational expenses like books, fees, travelling, etc.
Mr Apurba Mukherjee, Mayor – Durgapur Municipal Corporation was the chief guest of the occasion. He expressed his views on the abundant opportunities available to the students for quality higher education. Ms Kasturi Sengupta, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Durgapur, the guest of honor for the event shared that no matter what the circumstances, children should aim high, be determined and should always be self-motivated. The Block Development Officer, Kanksa, Ms Rakhi Biswas, in her address lauded the efforts of Essar Foundation in CSR interventions in the education sector.
Other dignitaries that participated and addressed the children included Mr Vilas Tawde, Project Manager, CBM Raniganj, Essar Oil Limited- Durgapur and Mr Anil Sharma, Head HR, EOL – Durgapur. Local political and trade union leaders were also present at the event.

Suman Das of class X of Gopalpur High School topped the list with an impressive 92.4% and Banashree Ghosh of Gopalpur Girls’ High School scored 80.71%. For class XII, Subham Mondal of Gopalpur High School secured 81% marks while Poly Mazumdar of Gopalpur High School got 78.20%. Among all the 63 students (30 boys and 33 girls) that qualified for this award, average marks were 64.20% in class X and 70.31% in class XII. The event was conducted at Srijoni Hall in City Centre, Durgapur on September 21, 2013.
