The Essar Foundation organized the second annual Independence Day Football Trophy at
at Akandara Village in Raniganj (West Bengal) from August 15 to 18, 2012, along with the team of Essar Oil’s CBM block in Durgapur.
The Foundation, through its many initiatives, aims to motivate and encourage rural youth. Football being an integral part of the culture in rural Bengal, the Foundation found the ideal platform to engage with the region's large youth population.
The tournament began with the opening ceremony on August 15, and was inaugurated by Ajay Kumar Nand, IPS, Commissioner
of Police – Durgapur-Asansol Commisionerate, and SMH Mirza,
IPS, Superintendent of Police – Burdwan District.
This was followed by two exhibition matches. The first match was between the Essar XI and Villagers XI teams and the second match between Police XI and Essar XI. The highlight of the second match was that the Police XI team was led by the Commissioner and Superintendent of Police. Their energy and enthusiasm highlighted the value of sports and fitness.
The knock-out tournament saw the participation of 16 teams. Last year’s winners – Team Labnapara – succcessfully defended the cup and claimed the trophy for the second year.
On the final day of the tournament, Moloy Ghatak, Minister, Law & Judiciary Department, Government of West Bengal presided as chief guest.
