The Essar Foundation and Essar Power Jharkhand marked National Education Day, November 11, at the site of the Tori power project, by formally handing over a furnished school building to the local administration.

The new Essar Middle School is located in Chatro village, near the power project site. All the classrooms have been fitted with blackboards and benches; the school also has a separate room for staff and a huge playground. This is the only school in the locality having all these facilities.

The school was inaugurated by Baidhnath Ram, HRD Minister, Government of Jharkhand. The minister also distributed scholarship cheques to local students pursuing education beyond Class 10.

The joy of being in school
Schools in the villages around the Tori site, unfortunately, all have high dropout rates, absenteeism and low educational achievements. Two days prior to the inauguration, Essar Foundation celebrated ‘The Joy of Being in School’, using colours as the medium to bring the school closer to children; the initiative was facilitated by the Akansha Foundation, a Mumbai-based NGO. (Akanksha is a non-profit organization that works primarily in the field of education, with a mission to impact the lives of children from low-income communities.)

The event took place on October 9-10 at Essar Middle school. Over 60 children enjoyed painting on their T-shirts and canvases on the first day. which created the zeal to paint the school walls on the following day. The masterpieces were created and displayed by the children with a sense of achievement and delight, while the painted T-shirts were taken home by the children with a lot of pride.
