27th October, 2015 was a special day for the children of Andhjan Shikshan Mandal, Surat and Blind School, Dharampur. They enjoyed the screening of the audio-described movie 3 idiots at the Science Centre in Surat. The movie was screened by Essar Foundation under its unique initiative, UNMUKT - which is a national programme for outreach and strategic inclusion of the differently abled. This was the second screening of audio-described movie by Essar Foundation in Surat. 172 children from Andhjan Shikshan Mandal, Surat and Blind School, Dharampur stayed put through the entire screening. Many attendees also ‘watched’ the film blindfolded, to experience the film differently.
The technology of audio-description includes a voice over that describes the portions that have silent action and visuals, and fills the gaps where the visually impaired might have difficulty relating to the story. This allows a visually impaired person, whether partially or completely blind, to enjoy a film without being dependent on a sighted person.
