As families and communities across Gujarat celebrated ‘Navratri’ to the beats of the ‘Raas’ and ‘Garba’ dance, the Essar Foundation organized a special group dance programme for the community in Hazira village.

‘Garba’ is an Indian group dance form that originated in the Gujarat region. It is usually performed during the nine-day Hindu festival of Navratri. Modern Garba is also heavily influenced by the ‘Raas Dandiya’, a dance traditionally performed by men. The merging of these two dances has not come to be the high-energy dance that is seen today.

On the afternoon of October 4, 2011, over 50 village women, from ages 16-35, dropped in at Hazira High School, the venue for the celebrations.
