Essar has consistently supported children and youth in their overall development, with special emphasis on sports and athletics. Recently, the Foundation took the opportunity of encouraging athletes with intellectual disabilities in representing the country in an international sporting event.
On July 6, 2013, an event was organized in Surat by the District Sport Department and the Special Olympics Gujarat Charitable Trust, to commemorate athletes from Gujarat who were selected for the Special Olympics Regional Games, Australia 2013. On the occasion, Capt. Subhas Das, CEO-Essar Bulk Terminal (EBTL), Hazira handed over a check as financial assistance to support participation of intellectually challenged children in the Special Olympics Regional Games to be held in New Castle, Australia from November 28-December 8, 2013.
The assistance will cover air fare, lodging and boarding expenses of one of the participating athletes, in the multi-country event.
These athletes have been training hard for over two years to participate in the Regional Games. Over 2,000 Special Olympics athletes from 30 countries in the Asia Pacific region will compete in the first ever Special Olympics Regional Games.
