Essar Foundation has undertaken multiple activities in the past which have not only helped conserve the environment, but also created awareness, educating local communities about sustainable practices. In keeping with this, Essar Foundation, Vizag Operations, recently initiated an activity involving tree plantation and resource conservation in Andhra Pradesh. Under its “Go Green” initiative, it carried out a fruit sapling plantation drive in the areas located between the villages of Rallegedda and Kondasanta.
The exercise aimed at educating school-going children in the area about the benefits of sustainable agriculture. Close to 100 fruit plant saplings were distributed to the schools in the one-day programme. Approximately 300 students from eight villages, as well as their teachers benefitted from this exercise. Students and the teachers enthusiastically undertook the responsibility of planting the saplings in their school premises. Each school was given seven saplings of an improved variety, including mango, almond, chikoo, pomegranate, guava, orange, apple and grapes. The initiative was greatly appreciated by the teachers, students and members of the village community.
Deepak David, Head-CSR, Vizag Operations, said, “Sustainability is a key pillar of Essar’s Corporate Social Responsibility, where ‘care for environment’ and ‘care for communities’ are important focus areas. Conserving the environment and augmenting social infrastructure is extremely close to our heart. We aim to constantly implement programmes that reinforce this philosophy, and this tree plantation drive is one such meaningful effort.”
