
The Essar Foundation in association with The Hindu organized a poster design contest on the occasion of the 42nd Earth Day at Andhra University, Andhra Pradesh, to create awareness on environment protection and resource conservation among the new generation. The theme of the contest was global warming.
Around 300 students from classes V to X took part in designing the posters using water colors, crayons. Thought-provoking slogans were written on the posters along, such as 'Global warming is increasing, act before it is too late', ‘Save Earth - stop global warming', 'Save Earth, save our environment', etc.
The event was also visited by a number of dignitaries including Mr DB Subba Rao, former Chairman of the Bar Council of India, Mr Sistla Srinivas, Head of the Department of Fine Arts, Mr K Suryanarayan, Conservator of Forest, Mr K Lohitasyudu, District Forest Officer, and Mr KV Rao, Joint Chief Environmental Engineer of AP Pollution Control Board.
Mr K Bhaktavatsalam, Head, Essar Steel India, Vizag Operations, addressed the audience and during his speech talked about how global warming is a threat in today’s world. He pressed the importance of the '5 Rs': reduce, reuse, recycle, restore and replenish, while protecting Mother Earth and conserving energy.
The best posters were rewarded and all the children were given saplings to recognize their participation and encourage green living.
