UMANG – A platform for Essar Ladies Club (EPMPL) organised a function on 15th October for children with special needs at Waidhan, Singrauli (MP). These children with special needs (include visually impaired, hearing impaired and intellectually challenged) fall in the age group of 6 to 14 years and are receiving inclusive education under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. They are cared for in a special residential hostel run by Nav Pravah (NGO).
It is estimated that of the 75 million children of primary school age who are out of school, one third are children with disabilities. Facing daily discrimination in the form of negative attitudes makes them demoralized. Therefore an inclusive education is imperative and acts as an aid in the children’s rights and needs.
The objective of the program was to spend time with the children, understand their feelings, share happiness and support them. Children with hearing impairment played quiz with member of ladies club and asked questions in sign language, while children with visual impairment presented songs and shared their experience of using braille in school.
The whole program was fun filled where sweets, fire sparklers, and candles got the children joyous. The ladies of Umang also gifted utensils for the hostel kitchen. The day ended with bright smiles, joy and warmth.
