World over, marathons are popular fundraising platforms, and the Standard
Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) is no exception. Every year, the SCMM serves
the dual purpose of promoting health and wellness, and raising funds for NGOs
across the country. This year, the 9th SCMM was held on January 15, and witnessed
approximately 21,000 participants from the corporate, entertainment and sports worlds.
Essar has been the associate sponsor for the event from 2004-07, and Essarites have
been active participants in the SCMM since its inception, coming out in large numbers
to ‘Run for a Reason’ in the 6-km Dream Run.
For the last two years, Essarites have participated in the Dream Run to raise funds for CHildren In Pain (CHIP), Mumbai – an NGO working in partnership with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to improve the education system in the city's municipal schools. Running under the banner of the Essar Foundation, the 220-strong Essar contingent was the largest corporate to participate. Essarites from all businesses contributed to this cause. We also had Essarites who ran the half-marathon.
In the run up to SCMM 2012, weekly health and wellness workshops were also organized for the participants at the Mahalaxmi and Kurla offices. Topics ranged from preventive cardiology and stress management to general health and power meditation – all arranged for the sole purpose of creating greater awareness of a healthy workplace. 'Health Bites' that included a motivational quote and a health tip were communicated to all the runners over the last fortnight before the marathon.
