Essar Foundation and Essar Steel India Limited’s Vizag operations organized an orientation program to promote the use of sanitary napkins among adolescent girls. The event was held at the Pre-Matric Girls’ Hostel in Palnar at Dantewada district, Chhattisgarh, on September 18, 2014.
Hundred adolescent girls from standards 8 to 12 attended the program along with four lady teachers. The students were told about the different aspects of the menstrual cycle – the dos and don’ts to be followed when they have their period, the nutrition required during that time, as well as how to use and dispose sanitary napkins.
Essar Foundation organized the program because it is important for adolescent girls to understand the importance of menstrual hygiene. It has been observed that women in rural areas in India often suffer from diseases due to a lack of awareness on practising hygiene during their menses. Another reason for health issues is the economic inability to purchase good sanitary napkins. Essar Foundation also supports the production of ‘Sahaj’, low-cost sanitary napkins, by women of a local self-help group.
