Alongside, clients have frequently recognised EPL for its safety practices. The Essar Projects Minerals and Metals SBU team working on critical civil and mechanical works at Angul, Odisha, has received several honors for exemplary performance in safety, health and environment (HSE) management in recent months. The projects are being executed for Jindal group companies and for Larsen & Toubro. At Tori, Jharkhand, it logged a safety milestone as it completed five million work hours (on March 22, 2013) at the Essar Power project site. And in April this year, Jurong Aromatics of Singapore honored the Essar Projects team for its excellence in project safety and execution.

Training for safety
Essar Projects believes in driving home constant awareness of behavior that ensures safety. Through ‘Daily Musings’, initiatives with creative messaging — calendars regular quizzes, etc — reviews and meetings, the awareness of safety practices is highlighted at all sites and at all times.
Training focuses on the full range of operations as well as specific equipment — among others, building and dismantling scaffolding, bar-bending machine operations, excavation works, gantry operations, safe gas cutting practices, grinding works, radiography, rigging practices, shot blasting, work near deep water, works near DSL and HT lines, etc. There is also training in incident investigation. More commonly, workers are trained in handling various materials, working in confined spaces, emergency action plan and drills, first aid, defensive driving and even ergonomics and even safety at home.
Select employees undergo the one-month Certified Scaffolding Training from CITB UK, while supervisors receive training in dealing with hazards specific to the construction industry.
