The Essar Foundation has initiated a number of programs and activities focused on health and education. Since the state of Gujarat has considerably high malnutrition rates among children between three months to six years, the Essar Foundation has partnered with the Jamnagar district administration to combat malnutrition challenges.
Towards this effort, the Foundation has also joined hands with the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) department at Jamnagar to ensure that nutritious food and fruits reach affected children.
The Foundation, through employee volunteering, is working with anganwadi workers*, helping them to learn not only innovative pedagogy in early childhood education but also improve their nutrition awareness.
As part of this effort, nutrition workshops were organized for anganwadi workers of four villages – Singach, Jakhar, Vadinar and Timdi – on September 15-16, 2012.
An orientation session was also organized to enable employees to understand the facets of ICDS and its work. The volunteers were grouped with the anganwadi workers and had group discussions on various topics related to child health and welfare.
*Anganwadis are centers created under the Integrated Child Development Services program of the Indian government, which provides early childhood education for children aged 2-5 years as well as addresses their nutrition and hygiene needs.
