Safety is a matter of faith at Essar where the health, safety and environment (HSE) management systems strive to meet benchmarked global standards. The message to all stakeholders is that 'Safety is a value embedded in our hearts and minds and it is not just a priority.'
All Essar companies have excellent records for lost-time incidents (LTI) and been recipients of prestigious awards in recognition of their safety practices. Management across the companies demonstrate commitment by implementing HSE best practices. The foundation of Essar Steel's strong HSE Management System, for example, is its HSE Policy, Safety Mandates – A Fatality Prevention Tool and its HSE Code of Conduct, which emphasizes that safety is at the center of its business planning, designing and decision-making process.
Global standards
At Essar Oil, the Vadinar Refinery health, safety, environment and fire management system is on par with the best in the industry globally. The Essar Refinery integrated management system ensures consistency in organizational resources, helps to streamline processes, reduce costs and improve efficiency. To ensure safe operation at the refinery, about 3,000 standard procedures have been developed and implemented, with special focus on critical operating procedures. Consequently, thanks to its excellent safety track record, Essar Oil has been recognized worldwide as a leader in safe work practices, receiving awards by reputed organizations such as the British Safety Council, Greentech, Gujarat Safety Council, Golden Peacock, Indian Chemical Council (ICC), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Confederation of Indian Industry's (CII) and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Part of work culture
HSE practices have also been embedded into the work culture of Essar Wildcat, a semi-submersible rig owned and operated by Essar Oilfield Services (EOSL), which, last November, completed four LTI-free years. For this achievement, the Wildcat crew was recently felicitated by the Houston-headquartered International Association of Drilling Contractors. The rig is currently deployed with ConocoPhillips Indonesia on a 13 well drilling and completion contract in the West Natuna Sea, Indonesia.
Mr. Erec Isaacson, president of ConocoPhillips Indonesia, also honored EOSL with a Certificate Award for continuous commitment (completing a year without incident) to support its HSE performance in achieving 'Target Zero' in lost-time incidents.
Many other Essar companies also record similar accident-free or injury-free events, or report achieving LTI-free working. Considering the fact that many of these companies operate in some of the most hazardous sectors — steel manufacture, refineries and oil exploration — their achievements are all the more significant.
