THE Essar Foundation, which believes that a holistic and integrated approach to education can vastly improve a child’s educational achievements, launched a special program for teachers at 18 primary schools and four high schools in Durgapur, West Bengal in India in May and June. The program focuses on the teaching of English and Mathematics.

The teacher’s training program saw 58 primary school teachers from 18 schools undergo training in English and Mathematics, with an emphasis on group development, group work, role play and practice sessions. Teachers were introduced to specially designed kits, which would help them motivate students and help them gain competency in numeracy, language and analytical skills.

This multimedia training kit, called K-Yan, has been designed by the IL&FS Education & Technology Services Ltd, which promotes education, employability and empowerment, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. K-Yan integrates the latest in technology with the learning and training needs of students.

The K-Yan that was introduced to teachers includes the West Bengal Board syllabus for students from class V to X in the Bengali medium. The Essar Foundation has decided to supply these K-Yan kits to four high schools in areas impacted by its coal-bed methane project in eastern India.

K-Yan will definitely change the status of education in our school.” Soma Bose, a teacher from the Gopalpur primary school, was very clear the program provided a new dimension of teaching for them.

The Essar Foundation plans to distribute English and Mathematics kits and workbooks to students in 22 schools and expects this program to benefit about 2,350 secondary school students. Regular monitoring of the program will be done jointly by the Foundation and experts from the IL&FS.
