The 24th Burdwan District Book Fair 2011-2012 was organized by the Government of West Bengal
and Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation; Essar lent its support by sponsoring
the week-long (January 4-10, 2012) event.
The event was inaugurated on January 4 at the Utsav Maidan, Burdwan. The main objective of the fair was to promote Bengali literature and culture, and to give budding writers and novelists a platform to showcase their work. Around 80 publishing companies participated in the event.
The book fair drew huge crowds from school and college-going students. The
inauguration ceremony started with Bengali and tribal cultural programs. It
was followed by the lighting of the lamp and launching of the Book Fair Souvenir by Sports
Minister of West Bengal Mr. Madan Mitra and Mr. Swapan Debnath, MLA Burdwan.
Mr. Mitra stressed the importance of rural libraries. District Magistrate of Burdwan District Mr. Omkar Singh Meena, Additional District Magistrate (Land Acquisition) Mr. Shyamal Mondal and District Library Officer Mr. Sumanta Banerjee were also present. Renowned novelist Mr. Nirab Sarkar was honored on the occasion. Essar Oil, Durgapur, was represented by CBM Raniganj Project Director Mr. Shashank Shekher.
